What is the driving theory test?

The driving theory test is a mandatory computer based exam, set by the DVSA. This test assesses a learner driver's understanding of key driving principles, road regulations, traffic signs, and safe driving practices.

The theory test is the first step for leaner drivers, ensuring that they gain the essential knowlege needed for safe and responsible driving.

All learners are required to pass their theory test before they can book the practical driving test.

When should you start revising

Start as soon as possible. The earlier you start the more prepared you will be for your theory test and lessons.

Can you take your theory test before you have any lessons?

Yes, you can take your theory test anytime after you turn 17!

The theory test is split into two sections; a multiple choice test and a hazard perception section.

The multiple choice section contains 50 questions about the highway code.

The hazard perception section features 14 video clips, of a variety of different road scenes. You will be required to identify the hazards in each clip as quick as possible.

As with the test, the pass requirements are split into the two sections:

Multiple choice - Score 43 or above out of 50

Hazard perception - Score 44 of more out of 75 points.

You will need to allow at least 2 hours from start to finish. This allows time for registration, practice questions, and receiving your results.
